Chiefs In Mulanje Hail SHDT For Aiding Victims Of Cyclones

Chiefs in Phalombe in April 2023 hailed SHDT for aiding victims of cyclone Freddy which caused flooding and made thousands of Malawians homeless. The chiefs thanked SHDT after making a donation of assorted items which were distributed to the victims. The items distributed were 5kgs 509 bags of flour and 20 Lifestraw water purifiers. Mark Lundy in partnership with Chikondano Yona and George Katunga Million MP for Phalombe central sourced from well wishers 3000 USD (K3,000,000) used to buy the relief items.The cyclone Freddy victims have so many immediate needs such as buckets, blankets, food, cooking utensils, clothes and plastic sheets.

In a related development SHDT donated black plastic sheets to Cyclone Freddy victims in Mulanje, Mathambi area, who were seeking shelter at Chimwaza Primary school after their homes were destroyed by the cyclone. The school hosted victims from several affected villages including Nansongole, Namunda, Sonjeka and Dukuda villages in T/A Mabuka where hundreds of hectares of crop fields and houses had been washed away by the flooding Ruo river which overflowed its banks as a result of the cyclone.

During a special ceremony held in march 2023, SHDT donated black plastic sheets to the victims seeking shelter at Chimwaza Primary school to assist them rebuild their damaged homes and cover parts of the homes whose walls have fallen. The plastics were worth about K5 million and there were 750 rolls with each roll containing sheets of 200 meters each. It was estimated that the plastics would cater for 4,500 households, with each family receiving 40 metres.

SHDT officials who graced the ceremony included Board members, Dr Limbani Nsapato and Mervis Mangulenje as well as Administrator, Wadson Muheya .
